General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and
manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power
generation systems. GA-EMS' expanding portfolio of specialized
products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet,
space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy,
and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial,
and commercial customers worldwide.
We have an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Engineering (EE)
Manager to join our Electrical Technologies Power Electronics and
Systems Design Team located in Rancho Bernardo. We are looking for
someone with drive, talent, and experience in the industry's latest
Power Electronics and Systems solutions who also thrives in a
fast-paced, Research and Development (R&D) environment. The
successful candidate will report to the Director of Electrical
Technologies and, alongside high-caliber engineering and management
staff, will be engaged in the engineering support and new
development of Power Electronics and Power Systems for high-power
motor drives, power conditioning systems, high-energy laser
systems, lithium-ion battery systems, advanced aerospace and
electro-optic sensors, space-based optical communications, nuclear
thermal propulsion, cutting-edge technology ventures into Defense
and "New Space," and a variety of disruptive technologies in the
expanding product portfolio of GA-EMS.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with GA-EMS Engineering staff in the concept development
and prototype design, integration, and test of power electronics
for all product lines and technology areas. These encompass
high-power motor drives, power conditioning systems, high-energy
laser systems, battery systems, advanced aerospace and
electro-optic sensors, space-based optical communications, small
satellites and space systems, nuclear thermal propulsion, optical
beam pointing and control, and signal/image processing.
- Generate electrical architecture solutions for new project
needs, perform engineering analyses for systems, document findings,
communicate results to engineering and program management staff,
give technical presentations, and manage technical effort resource
plans, tasking, and schedules.
- Responsible for the planning, managing and technical
performance of one or more significant engineering units through
all phases of assigned project(s) from inception through
completion.
- Participate with technical staff, program managers and
executive management to develop and implement current, annual and
long-term technical, schedule, quality, business and financial
objectives for the unit(s).
- May be responsible for decisions that have an extended impact
on outcomes where erroneous decisions could result in critical
delays and modifications to projects.
- Participate in and coordinate the establishment of design
concepts, criteria, and engineering efforts for product research,
development, testing, and integration.
- Interact with management and customer representatives
concerning projects, operational decisions, scheduling requirements
and contractual clarification.
- Act as primary contact for engineering activities.
- Contribute to the preparation of proposals, business plans,
proposal work statements and specifications, operating budgets and
financial terms/conditions of contract(s).
- Ensure technical leadership and excellence is maintained by
directing and participating in the planning, attraction, selection,
retention, and development of the required management,
professional, and technical talent.
- Identify engineering issues and provide leadership in
developing solutions such as re-allocation of resources or
modifying contract specifications.
- Participate in the development of new business opportunities
and expansion of existing business opportunities.
- Participate with Group management in pursuing business
partnerships, alliances, and joint ventures that enhance the
capabilities of the Group/Company.
- Represent the company as a prime technical contact on contracts
and/or projects and interact with senior external personnel on
technical matters requiring coordination between the
organizations.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:
- Typically requires a bachelor's, master's or PhD in engineering
or a related technical field as well as thirteen (13) or more years
of progressively complex engineering experience with at least seven
(7) of those years having management responsibilities. May
substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance is
required.
- Required Experience: Power Electronics; both analog and digital
circuit design.
- Desirable Experience: Power systems; power supplies; multiphase
DC-to-DC converters; embedded controls in power electronics;
digital or microprocessor control of power supplies; guiding a
design through development and into production; familiarity with
DoD technical review process (at a minimum, SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR);
analysis, design, and implementation of hardware systems to include
digital, analog, RF, laser, and optical is required.
- Desired Skills (ranked high to low): PowerPoint Engineering;
Microsoft Project; PCB Design Software (e.g. Altium Designer);
SPICE circuit design, modeling, and simulation tools; power supply
and power system design tools (e.g. MATLAB Simulink, PLEXIM PLECS,
Ridleyworks); HyperLynx Signal/Power Integrity tools.
- Demonstrate extensive technical expertise and application of
engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice as well as
comprehensive project management and leadership skills including
organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to
meet established deadlines or milestones.
- Must possess the ability to resolve complex management and
technical problems.
- Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and
interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface
with other departments, all levels of management, professional and
support staff, customers, potential customers, and government
representatives.
- Customer-focused and able to formulate plans based on the
development of innovative new designs in resolving advanced
technical engineering problems.
- Able to work extended hours and travel as required.
